The Commissioner, on the recommendation of the Minister, under section 23 of the Wildlife Act and every enabling power, makes the Nuisance Bison Control Regulations.

Interpretation

1.

In these regulations,

"bison" includes wood bison, hybrid bison and plains bison; (bison)

"Bison Control Area" means the area described in section 2; (région de contrôle du bison)

"Wood Buffalo National Park" means the Wood Buffalo National Park of Canada as described in Schedule 1, Part 2 of the Canada National Parks Act, S.C. 2000, c.32. (parc national Wood Buffalo) R-091-2019,s.2.

A reference to regulations without a citation is a reference to regulations made under the Wildlife Act. R-090-98,s.2.

General

2.

For the purposes of these regulations, the area described in the Schedule is the area to which these regulations apply and shall be known as the Bison Control Area.

3.

Bison found in the Bison Control Area are declared to be nuisance wildlife.

4.

(1) A resident may, at any time, hunt bison found within the Bison Control Area.

(2) A resident who kills a bison found within the Bison Control Area shall

(a) as soon as practicable report the killing to an officer;

(b) advise an officer of the location of the killing;

(c) if requested by an officer, accompany the officer to the location of the killing; and

(d) provide such other information and specimens as the officer requests.

(3) A resident who kills a bison found within the Bison Control Area may butcher, transport and store the bison until an officer has an opportunity to inspect the bison.

(1) A resident who wounds a bison within the Bison Control Area and who is unable to locate the bison shall, as soon as practicable, report the wounding to an officer.

(2) An officer who receives a report of the wounding of a bison under subsection (1) shall, as soon as practicable and when possible, locate and kill the bison.

(3) The officer who kills a bison under subsection

(2) shall dispose of the bison according to the terms of the Certification and Disposal of Wildlife Regulations.

(4) For the purposes of subsection (3), the person who wounded the bison shall not be considered to be the person who killed the bison.

6.

(1) An officer who receives a report of the killing of a bison under subsection 4(2) shall, as soon as possible, inspect the bison pursuant to the Certification and Disposal of Wildlife Regulations.

(2) An officer who inspects a bison under subsection (1) may request such information as he or she considers necessary to complete an inspection of the bison.

(3) Repealed, R-062-2011,s.2.

(a) All that portion of the Northwest Territories, as shown on the National Topographic Series Maps 85 B of Buffalo Lake, Edition 3, 85 C of Tathlina Lake, Edition 4, 85 D of Kakisa River, Edition 3, 85 E of Mills Lake, Edition 4, 85 F of Falaise Lake, Edition 4, 95 A of Trout Lake, Edition 3 and 95 H of Fort Simpson, Edition 2, produced at a scale of 1:250,000 by the Canada Map Office, Department of Natural Resources, Ottawa, and being more particularly described as follows:

(b) Commencing at the point of intersection of the Northwest Territories and Alberta boundary at approximate longitude 121°26N08O W;

(c) thence north in a straight line to its intersection with the southern extremity of Trout Lake at approximate latitude 60°22N31O N;

(d) thence northerly following the east shore of Trout Lake to its intersection with east bank of the Trout River at approximate latitude 60E44N02O N and approximate longitude 121E09N W;

(e) thence northeasterly following the east bank of the Trout River to its intersection with the south bank of the Mackenzie River at approximate latitude 61E18N48O N and approximate longitude

119E51N02O W;

(f) thence easterly following the south bank of the Mackenzie River to its intersection with approximate latitude 61E26N21O N and approximate longitude

118E04N45O W;

(g) thence easterly in a straight line to its intersection with the north shore of Meridian Island at approximate latitude 61E26N23O N and approximate longitude 118E02N52O W;

(h) thence southeasterly following the north shore of Meridian Island to its southeast corner at approximate latitude 61E18N06O N and approximate longitude 117E37N W;

(i) thence southeasterly in a straight line to its intersection with the south bank of the Mackenzie River at approximate latitude 61E16N30O N and approximate longitude 117E36N08O W;

(j) thence easterly following the south bank of the Mackenzie River to its intersection with the south shore of Great Slave Lake;

(k) thence easterly following the south shore of Great Slave Lake to its intersection with the west bank of the Buffalo River at approximate latitude 60E52N55O N and approximate longitude 115E02N50O W;

(l) thence southerly following the west bank of the Buffalo River to its intersection with the north boundary of Wood Buffalo National Park at approximate latitude 60E31N15O N and approximate longitude 115E03N20O W;

(m) thence westerly and southerly following the north and west boundary of Wood Buffalo National Park to its intersection with the Northwest Territories and Alberta boundary;

(n) thence west along the Northwest Territories and Alberta boundary to the point of commencement.
